My problems could be more than my original question, but I dont know enough yet on where else to start.Īlternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. I ocasionally get error messages where neither will work and I end up having to dismount the HD and sometimes restart the MBA in order to make either work. I store 2nd libraries for iTunes and iPhoto on the My Passport. Is this OK, do I need to do something more I used the HD as extra storage as the SSD on the MBA isnt enough for my needs.
When I try running the Repair Disk, I get a message saying: Verify and Repair volume My Passport for Mac Volume repair complete. My Passport Couldn'T Unmount Disk Mac As AnĪfter running the Verify disk, it says that the volume needs to be repaired.
I simply had to stop using OS X on my macbook because it is unusable for my work and I am using windows 10 instead, I realized I like the system even better than OS X in the end, maybe it's a tiny bit less polished on the surface, but much more powerful and a cure for all my apple induced headaches. The funny thing is that when I installed Windows 10 in bootcamp, everything works perfectly fine in there.
I am always eager to try every new update from Apple if it fixed it only to be dissapointed again and again, it's still happening with High Sierra. It reconnects immediately, but it is enough to ruin a VM permanetly after several occurences.
I used to run a bigger VM from my USB3 external hard drive, but then the drive started ejecting by itself in the middle of work for no apparent reason.
It wasn't present at first when I bought my macbook pro 13" retina, 2013, but it started appearing after some update to os x. I have this problem for several years now with all my USB3 drives. SSD I might not worry, but those passports have a very short lifespan. Although I wouldn't want a mechanical disk on all the time. A powered hub will keep the disk on all the time that is connected to the hub, but might or might not avoid it for "unsafely" unmounting. I just found that FW800 with the Apple Thunderbolt adapter works perfectly well on my iMac, so I just stick with that.Īgree, you shouldn't have your external disks unchecked, or it might risk loosing data. It can just be a matter of finding the correct combination that works, but you can throw money it at it buying drives, enclosures, hubs and cables, until you get it right. Much of the issue is simply dependent on a variety of factors - age of HD in use, make of HD in use, model of HD in use, same for the bridge adapters in the enclosures (including what chipset is used) and any hubs in use, even some cables. Overall it seems like a bit of black magic is going on. Many users report no problems, but others cannot fix this at all, some manage a fix using certain methods. Having read a lot of articles and forums over the last few years, it seems there are too many possible causes, although the most likely and most common seems to be the way power is applied to USB3 drives during sleep mode. I'm not so sure it is just an Apple issue, as I found a lot of Windows users were reporting problems with USB3 as well when I first started noticing the issue. I am going to start ejecting every time now. That is scary that you lost you HD because of it. I am not a programmer but it sounds like it would be a pretty simple fix. Wait.this is a common problem and Apple won't fix it? I don't understand. Or maybe connecting it via a powered USB hub. That may not be possible, but if it is, it would be done with the WD Utilities. Maybe making the sleep time of the Passport longer will help. It is part of the Disk Utility app that comes with your Mac.ĭisk Utility also might be able to see and mount the HD after it is disconnected. Those disconnection errors can cause problems that Disk Utility can fix. Sometimes if I switch ports it will recognize it without restarting but that is still annoying.įirst of all, you should run Disk First Aid on the Passport HD once in a while. The bigger problem is that I can't get the Mac to recognize the HD again until I restart it. After I wake it up I get the error that the disk was not eject properly.
After I am done editing or if I take a break the computer goes into sleep mode. I use a 1TB Passport external HD to hold all of my photos.
